Union federation Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) says it strongly rejects the possibility of liquidation of the South African Post Office (SA Post Office). The trade union says this will lead to thousands of workers losing their jobs.

Last week, the Post Office’s business rescue practitioners briefed the Portfolio Committee on Communications and Digital Technologies on the entity’s future sustainability and the practitioners’ exit timelines.
They told the committee that the risk of liquidating the Post Office is not gone, adding that they were promised R3.8 billion, 18 months ago, but that is not forthcoming.

The Post Office was placed in business rescue in July 2023. COSATU Parliamentary co-ordinator, Matthew Parks, says the Post Office requires business practitioners who are able to put the entity on a stable footing for years to come.
“COSATU rejects, in the strongest possible terms, the ludicrous proposal to liquidate the Post Office by the supposed business rescue practitioners (BRPs). These are the same BRPs who, in 2023, appointed the court-approved agreement with creditors and the Department of Communications and Digital Technologies,” says Parks.
He says the proposal would result in the retrenchment of 10 000 employees, plunging their families into abject poverty and despair, and lead to the closure of thousands of branches with a customer base that has the potential to recover.
“Workers have reported that the BRPs have failed to pay millions of rands owed to employees, including medical aid, pension funds, and taxes,” he adds.
