Rains cause further damage in three districts in Limpopo

Persistent rainfall in three districts in Limpopo continues to damage critical infrastructure.
Vhembe and Mopani Districts have been the hardest hit, with some areas receiving over 100 mm of rain in the last 48 hours.
The heavy downpours have wreaked havoc, with bridges collapsing and cutting off communities.

A bridge at Tshikunda outside Thohoyandou, which connects the village to nearby areas and the Donald Fraiser Hospital, has collapsed.
The bridge has left residents stranded, without access to essential services.
Frustrated road users, Tshimangadzo Tshivhase Netselo and Livhuwani Mphaphuli had this to say.
“It affects my monthly instalment payments because I took two taxis which I’m still paying for them. We don’t have money to pay because of this road. This broken road affected us as a community just because we have the students, they can’t go to school. We have patients, they are no longer using this road to the hospital. It has affected us very much.”
The Limpopo government says the Provincial Disaster Management Centre is on high alert and is prepared to assist affected communities.
While the Limpopo Education Department announced on Sunday that schooling has been suspended at institutions severely affected by floods.
