Another major power failure has hit Nelson Mandela Bay in the Eastern Cape. It’s the third major outage in recent weeks.
Large parts of Gqeberha are expected to be without power for up to 21 days, following the collapse of a transmission pylon on the Chelsea – Arlington – Walmer – Summerstrand line earlier this week.
The municipality has blamed gale-force winds for the damage.
More than 60 disabled adults at the Cheshire Home are among those affected.
Manager of the Home, Deidre Burger says, “Essential care for residents with physical disabilities or with wheelchair users, mobility aid users, we need nurse bell systems, which are next to their beds if they need help in the middle of the night, for whatever reason they need care immediately, so they press their nurse bells. They need food that is cooked properly and stored properly. Some people need medically powered equipment, such as ventilating.”
