Numsa relieved as final bodies of Ekapa miners retrieved

The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) says they are relieved that the bodies of all five mineworkers who died last month in the Ekapa Minerals Mine in Kimberley have been retrieved.
The miners were trapped 890 meters underground after a mudslide on February 17.
The last two bodies were brought to the surface on Monday morning.
The first body was found last Monday and the other two on Sunday.
Mineral and Petroleum Resources Minister Gwede Mantashe will be back at the Ekapa Minerals mine on Monday morning for the third time since this incident.
Numsa official in Kimberley Lerato Mohatlane says, “As Numsa we are relieved that the first part is now done, we wish these families strength during this period and we believe that the struggle for the liquidation process continues we will be back at court on the 17th April 2026.â€
Mohatlane says, “Again more than 1200 families were buried alive by the mine as their February salaries are still not paid so we then request DMR (Department of Mineral Resources) they must speed up the investigation.”
