Several political and civic organisations are taking to the streets of Durban on Wednesday for a planned protest. The aim is to put pressure on the authorities to take stronger action against undocumented foreign nationals.
Organisers say the demonstration is intended to spotlight what they describe as “persistent shortcomings in immigration enforcement, border control and regulatory oversight”.
March and March movement leader Jacinta Ngobese-Zuma says the march seeks to amplify calls for decisive government intervention, arguing that current measures to address illegal and undocumented immigration are insufficient.
Ngobese-Zuma says that the protest is meant to highlight what the participants believe to be the increasing impact of poor immigration management on local communities.
“Look, I think we have done a lot of work in terms of making sure that the message is sent. I think more than anything we have liberated a lot of South Africans who were fearful of coming out and openly say that they are tired of illegal immigrants. Right now you can see South Africans are free, they are saying it in numbers that they are proud and they are not afraid to say it anymore that illegal immigrants must go,” she says.
The demonstration is supported by leaders and members of ActionSA, the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) and the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party.

ActionSA leader Herman Mashaba, who is participating in the march, calls for stricter enforcement of immigration laws.
“It is my dream to see one day the Department of Home Affairs taking a clear direction making sure that illegal undocumented foreigners are actually deported en masse. That is the day I would really be satisfied. We are sitting not with thousands but with millions all over the country,” says Mashaba.
He adds, “Let’s start by getting out of these shops and out of our communities. Let’s deport them. We want to see mass deportation of these people going back to their countries. You see there’s thousands of our people and 54% of them don’t know where their next meal is going to come from.”
