The Polokwane Magistrate’s Court in Limpopo has postponed the bail application of eight people accused in the insurance-related killings linked to former police officer Rachel Kutumela to mid-April.
One of the accused, Johannes Shokane, has applied to be taken to a mental facility for observation.
The accused had allegedly insured nine unsuspecting victims, later had them killed and claimed insurance payouts amounting to R10 million.
The syndicate was allegedly led by Rachel Kutumela, her sister, Anna Shokane, and her daughter, Florah Shokane.
National Prosecuting Authority Spokesperson in Limpopo, Mashudu Malabi, says the bail application will be heard in mid-April.
“The defence was supposed to bring the psychiatrist so that they could talk about the mental state of the accused number four. However, they’ve brought the occupational therapist. Those witnesses have said that they can’t comment on the mental state of the accused number four. Therefore, the matter has been postponed to allow them to come with the psychiatrist until the 14th of April, with other accused persons who are part of the bail application.”
Earlier this month, more suspects were arrested in connection with the case.
The suspects arrested included two brothers and a sangoma.
