Concern is mounting following reports that John Mary Ssebuwufu, the National Unity Platform (NUP) Election In-Charge for the Buganda region, was abducted last night under unclear circumstances.
According to information released by NUP officials, Ssebuwufu was last seen at the party’s headquarters, where he had been coordinating and managing election-related activities. His disappearance was later confirmed by his wife, who said he did not return home and has not been reachable since.
Party officials say Ssebuwufu’s role placed him at the center of election coordination in the Buganda region, making his disappearance especially alarming amid an already tense electoral environment marked by arrests, disruptions, and reports of intimidation targeting opposition figures and polling officials.
As of the time of publication, there has been no official communication from security agencies regarding his whereabouts or the reasons for his reported abduction. NUP has called for his immediate release and demanded accountability, stressing that enforced disappearances violate the Constitution and fundamental human rights.
The incident adds to growing concerns raised by opposition parties, civil society groups, and international observers about the safety of political actors and the broader climate in which Uganda’s elections are taking place. Calls are increasing for transparency, restraint by security forces, and urgent action to ensure the safety of all citizens involved in the electoral process.
