Absa Bell Tourney Ushers In Rukundo as New UGC Captain
The Uganda Golf Club celebrated a momentous occasion on Saturday at Kitante with the induction of Paul Rukundo as the new club captain during the 2024 Absa Captain’s Bell Tournament.
Rukundo, elected in March with a decisive 177-66 vote victory over former Vice Captain Paul Nuwagaba, succeeds Emmanuel Wamala, who had returned to the role last year at the club’s 93rd Annual AGM in April.
During the 19th hole ceremony, Rukundo emphasized the tournament’s rich history and the community it has fostered over the years.
“For over 70 years, the Captain’s Bell Tournament has united exceptional players, colleagues, and friends,” Rukundo remarked.
“Our community has flourished thanks to the unwavering support of partners like Absa Bank Uganda. We deeply value their dedication to enhancing the sport of golf in Uganda.”
Rukundo will work alongside Vice Captain Owachi Jerry, Vice Secretary Emmanuel Wamimbi, and Treasurer Walter Tukahirwa among others, as they steer the club into the future.
This year’s tournament, the sixth sponsored by Absa Uganda, featured a Sh152 million commitment from the bank.
Absa Bank’s Managing Director Mumba Kalifungwa expressed pride in the bank’s continued association with the event. “For Absa, this tournament is not just about competition but also community,” Kalifungwa stated. “It’s about fostering an environment where talent can flourish, and we are delighted to continue our partnership.”
“This event aligns perfectly with our purpose of ’empowering Africa’s tomorrow together, one story at a time,’ supporting excellence and fostering a spirit of community. The increased prize money reflects our dedication to enhancing the experience for all participants.”
State Minister for Sports Hon. Peter Ogwang also attended the event, revealing that starting next financial year, the government would commit Sh2.5 billion to improve golf facilities.
The tournament saw participation from over 40 professional and 220 amateur golfers. Ronald Rugumayo emerged victorious in the professional category, finishing with an impressive 7 under par and a total score of 205 strokes, earning the lion’s share of Sh20 million in prize money.
In the amateur categories, Joseph Cwinya-ai (Gross Men) and Peace Kabasweka (Gross Women) took top honors. Perez Muhwezi and Rose Azuba were the overall winners on stableford points on Saturday.
