ActionSA has welcomed Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana’s announcement that R883.8 million will be transferred from the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development to the Office of the Chief Justice (OCJ) over the medium term.
Godongwana who tabled the 2026/27 budget earlier on Wednesday, said this would enable the OCJ to manage its own budgets, enhancing its independence from the Executive from 1 April.
He also said an additional R687 million has been allocated to expand judicial capacity.
“I want to say that I am pleased that the judiciary has been given some more money. We’ve seen that our courts are really battling and that people who should be in court, prosecuted and sent to jail are not getting there because our courts are dysfunctional. So, this is a whole different kettle of fish to last year’s budget and we will monitor carefully how this budget is going to be applied, but it’s much better than last year,” says ActionSA Parliamentary leader, Athol Trollip.
