Bobi Wine Announces Exit from Uganda, Appoints Lina Zedriga Acting NUP President

By Kabuye Ronald

Opposition leader and former presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi, widely known as Bobi Wine, has announced that he is temporarily leaving Uganda to carry out what he described as “important work” with international allies.

In a brief video message shared Saturday, the leader of the National Unity Platform (NUP) said his departure would be short-term and aimed at strengthening global support for the opposition’s push for democratic reforms.

“I am announcing my brief exit from the country to handle important work. Over the next few weeks, I will engage with our friends and allies all over the world before returning to Uganda to continue the push for freedom and democracy,” Kyagulanyi said. “For now, let’s remain focused and united.”

Before leaving, Kyagulanyi appointed his deputy for North Uganda, Lina Zedriga, as Acting President of the party until his return.

In a statement posted on his X account, Kyagulanyi also reiterated his claims regarding the recent political situation in the country, accusing President Yoweri Museveni of ignoring the will of voters.

“Two months ago, Museveni yet again usurped the will of the people of Uganda and declared himself president at gunpoint,” Kyagulanyi wrote.

He further alleged that security forces targeted him shortly after the election.

“A day later, gripped by shame and fear, the military invaded my home to harm me, but I was able to evade them and go into hiding,” he said.

According to Kyagulanyi, authorities have been searching for him for weeks, conducting raids and arrests in an effort to locate him.

“Over the past two months, the regime has looked for me everywhere. They have raided the homes of many colleagues and fellow leaders, mounted roadblocks and spot checks of vehicles and motorcycles, arrested and dismissed the police officers assigned to my campaign, raided our home in the village, and kept my home under siege,” he said.

“Well, they couldn’t find me because the people of Uganda sheltered me and protected me.”
