The People’s Candidate Rewriting Uganda’s Hope Story » The Hoima Post –

Kampala – From ghetto stages to the ballot box, Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu—better known as Bobi Wine—has morphed from reggae icon to torch-bearer of a generation that refuses to whisper about injustice. A new in-depth profile on Parrots Uganda dubs him “The People’s Candidate,” tracing how the 42-year-old National Unity Platform (NUP) leader is redefining hope in a country where 80 % of the population was born after President Yoweri Museveni first shot his way to power in 1986.
The piece chronicles Bobi Wine’s journey from Kamwokya slum studios—where anthems like “Ghetto” and “Situka” became protest soundtracks—to the 2021 presidential race that saw him finish second with 35 % of the vote amid a hail of tear-gas and internet shutdowns. It spotlights the “People Power” movement’s shift from slogan to structured party, registering 1.2 million new voters ahead of the 2026 cycle, the biggest youth drive in Uganda’s electoral history.
Interviews with grassroots organisers reveal a parallel government-in-waiting: mobile legal clinics, citizen journalism hubs, and “ghetto cooperatives” that pool market-vendor savings to fund micro-loans. “We are practising the Uganda we want before we capture the Uganda we deserve,” Bobi Wine tells Parrots.
Over 3,000 supporters remain missing or in jail, according to NUP’s internal tally, while the singer-turned-politician has survived two suspected assassination attempts and countless arrests. Yet crowds still surge to see him, waving red berets that police have banned as “military attire.”
Academic Stella Nyanzi summarises the phenomenon: “Bobi Wine has weaponised hope. In a country numbed by 38 years of one man, that is the most subversive act of all.”
With nomination papers now filed for 2026, the profile closes on a defiant note: “We may be bruised, but we are not broken,” Bobi Wine declares. “Every scar is a ballot inked in advance.”
