In a resolute address marking Martyrs’ Day celebrations, Bishop Jacinto Kibuuka, chairperson of the Christian Ecumenical Council of Uganda (CECU), delivered a stern message against societal ills plaguing the nation. Amidst the solemn atmosphere at the Mamre International Prayer Centre in Namugongo, Bishop Kibuuka voiced his dismay over the rampant corruption, religious intolerance, and moral decay gripping Uganda.

With the memory of the Uganda Martyrs as a backdrop, Bishop Kibuuka called upon the public to reflect on their selfless devotion to God and their unwavering stand against evil. He condemned acts of nepotism, greed, and corruption, stressing that such vices erode the moral fabric of society and hinder progress.

“Let us heed the example of the Martyrs,” he urged, “and reject the temptation of selfishness and deceit. We must stand united against corruption and injustice, regardless of our tribal or political affiliations.”

In his impassioned plea, Bishop Kibuuka did not shy away from addressing external influences, particularly from the West, which he accused of imposing detrimental values on African Christians. He cautioned against the infiltration of ideologies such as homosexuality and moral decadence, urging Africans to uphold their faith and cultural values.

“As we commemorate the Martyrs’ sacrifice,” he declared, “let us reaffirm our commitment to truth, honesty, and genuine concern for others. Our Christianity must not be mere lip service but a reflection of our daily lives.”

The Martyrs’ Day celebrations also witnessed a call to action from Gerald Nangoli, Member of Parliament for Elgon North in Bulambuli district, who emphasized the need for collective efforts in fighting corruption. Nangoli echoed Bishop Kibuuka’s sentiments, urging Ugandans to emulate the Martyrs’ dedication and selflessness in their pursuit of a better society.

As attendees from various religious denominations and countries gathered under the banner of CECU, the message of unity and moral uprightness echoed across borders. Together, they stood in solidarity, determined to confront the challenges facing Uganda and Africa as a whole, with faith and integrity as their guiding principles.
