City Power says the first phase of its electric vehicle (EV) charging project will focus on installing standard charging stations across Johannesburg.
The initial rollout includes over a dozen chargers capable of powering vehicles in under an hour, significantly faster than the older systems.
The Utility’s Acting CEO Charles Tlouane says this phase is aimed at testing demand, and encouraging more residents to consider electric vehicles.
He says the next phase will introduce superchargers which drastically reduced charging times, alongside a broader rollout to improve accessibility across the city.
Tlouane says, “It is what we’ve tested as a proof of concept. It will work because we have looked at the market, how it was reacting with the old charging systems. The old charging system, they take hours, four hours, you know, like a car, but then we said, let’s start with this one…So when we move to the next phase, that will talk about the ones that are between five to 10 minutes to charge. These are the superchargers. and we’re excited about it.”
