The City Tyres East Africa Badminton Challenge is set to return for its seventh edition, following the renewal of a partnership between the Uganda Badminton Association (UBA) and the Mandela Group of Companies.

The annual tournament will be held from October 17th to 20th at the Lugogo Indoor Arena, Kampala.

The tournament will feature both team and individual events, attracting players from various categories, including schools, universities, corporates, and expatriates living in Uganda.

The competition has become a staple in the East African badminton calendar, with participants from across the region, including Tanzania, Burundi, South Sudan, DR Congo, Kenya, and Rwanda.

Speaking about the event, UBA CEO Simon Mugabi highlighted its importance, saying, “This is a special event that attracts a large number of participants, including youth, adults, and corporate teams.

“It brings together players from different regions, making it a key event on our calendar.”

Mugabi also announced that registration for the tournament is now open. “As hosts, we have already opened the registration. You only need to scan the code, which is now available online,” he added.

The Mandela Group of Companies, through its chief marketing manager, Herbert Bashasha, reaffirmed its commitment to the event. “We are proud to be sponsors of the 2024 City Tyres East African Badminton Challenge. This is the seventh time we are on board, and we pledge our 100% support. This sport cuts across all ages, including veteran teams with players over 50 years old and younger participants.”

Bashasha also revealed that the City Tyres team would be participating, expressing hope for improved performance following last year’s success.

Ugandan player Fadhila Shamika expressed confidence in Team Uganda’s prospects, saying, “Based on last year’s performance, I think Team Uganda did very well. We won all the events, and we aim to replicate that success this year.”

The City Tyres East Africa Badminton Challenge continues to grow in stature, fostering talent and competition across the region while bringing together players of all ages and backgrounds.
