The Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) has rejected proposals to liquidate the South African Post Office (SAPO).
The Labour Federation has accused the post office’s Business Rescue Practitioners (BRPs) of further crippling the institution and failing its employees.
The union is calling for the removal of the BRPs and wants the Department of Communications to put competent administrators in place.
COSATU Parliamentary co-ordinator, Matthew Parks, says the Post Office needs Business Practitioners who have the capabilities and commitment to stabilise the institution.
“They’ve failed to turn around the post off. They’ve failed to put in place a convincing turnaround plan, which is one of the difficulties for the national Treasury who have said they are willing to provide financial support, but they need to see a credible turnaround plan. Two years later, despite their discussions, the BRP has not provided anybody with a credible turnaround plan; all they simply ask for is more money, and they simultaneously retrench more staff. So, you don’t get a sense that the BRPs have done anything more than prolong the agony and worsen the situation.”
