Cosatu urges government to ramp up fight against illicit goods

The Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) has urged government to drastically ramp up efforts to tackle the selling of illicit goods in the country and customs fraud.
The labour federation welcomed President Cyril Ramaphosa’s commitment in his State of the Nation Address to fight the problem. However, it warned that the trade of illict goods poses a dire threat to local jobs, businesses, value chains and communities as well as the sin tax regime designed to minimise consumption of harmful products.
Cosatu says government must prioritise customs fraud as it has damaged industries such as textiles, footwear, leather, furniture, tyres, and other manufacturing sectors.
