The Gauteng High Court in Pretoria has found that the late leader of Congress of the People (COPE), Mosiuoa “Terror” Lekota was of unsound mind and incapable of managing his own affairs from 25 May 2025 to his passing on 4 March 2026.
The Court further found that during this period, his “partner” had emptied his bank account.
This finding emerged after Lekota’s wife Cynthia Lekota initially approached the court seeking the appointment of a court-appointed legal representative for access to the medical records of her husband, Mosiuoa Lekota.
The judgment, dated 23 March 2026, reveals that by the time Lekota’s “partner” was notified of the application on 11 February 2026 and the subsequent order by agreement that followed the next day; the sum of R250 000.00 was transferred to the “partner’s” attorneys of record and the sum of R150 000.00 was transferred to the “partner’s” property company from Lekota’s current account.
The court found that the withdrawal of money and emptying of Lekota‘s current account, on 12 February 2026 required explanation but none has been furnished.
The Court ruled that Lekota was of unsound mind and ordered Lekota’s partner to pay costs on Scale C.
