CWDM says property protection remains a priority amid Langeberg fires

The Cape Winelands District Municipality’s (CWDM) Fire Services say that property protection remains a priority as they continue to battle fires in the mountains above Rooiberg Cellar in the Langeberg area in the Western Cape.
The fire was ignited by lightning over the weekend, and two fire lines are still burning.
Fire Services spokesperson, Jo-Anne Otto, says that the fire in the mountains above Meulplaas, on the Montagu side, has been difficult to douse because of low visibility and uneven terrain.
Otto says those factors, combined with strong and shifting winds, have limited ground crews’ access to certain areas of the fire.
“The length of the fire lines and prevailing conditions also make the deployment of aerial resources ineffective. Fire crews have deployed purpose-built 4×4 vehicles and a range of other firefighting vehicles to areas where access is possible. Property protection remains a priority. Despite ongoing vigilance, some water pipes and crops bordering the veld have sustained damage,” adds Otto.
