The Department of Electricity and Energy says Eskom’s financial position remains solvent.
Senior officials from the department briefed Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on among others, the third quarter financial performance for 2025/26 of entities it oversees.
The department’s Deputy Director-General for Energy Enterprises Dr Kubeshnie Bhugwandin added that liquidity has improved with healthy cash balances.
Bhugwandin says Eskom is headed for a positive position by the end of the year.
“The latest projections are that the utility will remain profitable by the end of the year…by quarter three the net profit was R27.58 billion.”
Bhugwandin added that the utility has adhered to all the requirements for its debt relief plan, which is aimed at improving the balance sheet in order to do maintenance and reduce debt.
“Thus far R140 billion has been disbursed to Eskom, R76 billion in 2023/24, R64 billion in 2024/25 financial year. To date Eskom has met all strategic conditions and the subordinate loans have been successfully converted into equity. So, a further R80 billion will be disbursed in this financial year, Eskom will receive that end of March 2026.”
