Electoral Commission Disqualifies NUP Candidate Contesting Against Minister Kasaija

The Electoral Commission Chairperson, Justice Simon Byabakama has disqualified National Unity Platform’s Christopher Ategeka from the list of Contestants for Buyanja County Member of Parliament.

The grounds for his denomination was that he lacked the required number of signatures from area voters supporting his candidature as provided for under Section 28 (1) (c) of the Parliamentary Elections Act, Cap. 177.
“That it is apparent that the names, villages and NINs are all whitewashed except the signatures against the said names, implying that the existing signatures were for the whitewashed names of the people who had originally appended their signatures on the nomination paper.” Ruled Byabakama
The Petitioner , brought it to the attention of the Electoral Commission that when Ategeka Christopher presented his nomination papers for verification of the names and signatures supporting his nomination, three names of his supporters could not be validated on account of not being Registered Voters in Buyanja County.
Therefore, he whitewashed the names the Returning Officer had declined and replaced them with Nkuuna David,Byamukama Joseph and Kiirabo Vincent who did not append their signatures against their names.
