Talent Alone Isn’t Enough, Build Your Own Brands – Vinka Tips Artists
Vinka has shared her thoughts on what it takes for artists to succeed under a record label, stressing that talent alone is not enough and that musicians must actively build their own brands.
According to the Swangz Avenue singer, artists should not expect labels to do everything for them if they want long-term success.

Learn MoreSpeaking on a YouTube podcast while reflecting on Zafaran’s recent departure from Swangz Avenue, Vinka explained that record labels take a major financial risk whenever they sign a new artist.
She noted that although labels invest heavily in talent, it is ultimately the artist’s responsibility to ensure that investment pays off by developing a marketable image and putting in the necessary work.
Someone has gambled on your talent, they don’t know if their money will come back or not. They’ll invest but everything comes back to you.
You have to build your brand, the way you want people to see you and what will sell you out there.

She further dismissed the common belief that signing with a record label automatically guarantees success. According to Vinka, an artist may have access to professional songwriters, financial support, costumes, and other resources, but those alone cannot create a star.
She emphasised that personal drive, consistency, and branding are what ultimately separate successful artists from the rest.
Vinka also urged aspiring musicians to understand the realities of life under a record label before signing contracts. She explained that artists have to work even harder after being signed because they are expected to repay the label’s investment through their success, while labels continue bringing in new talent.
People are mistaken that they give you everything on a silver plate. That’s a poor mentality and we who are there know this. Even those coming to join should know that things aren’t easy.
In fact, when you’re signed under a label, you have to push a lot to pay that debt, and you can’t rest because the label will sign new talents every time.
