EThekwini expands to 112 wards after Council endorses

On Wednesday, the eThekwini Municipality announced that they had expanded their 111 wards to 112, a change set to take effect after the 2026/27 local government elections. ‘The additional ward will be located in the northern region of the municipality,” the statement read.
This follows the announcement by the Municipal Demarcation Board (MDB) in December last year that they had completed most of the wards for the Electoral Commission, with eThekwini and the neighbouring uMkhambathini Municipality being some of the holdouts.
The Electoral Commission said that the outstanding wards from the four KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) municipalities would not affect the upcoming elections.
The new boundary adjustments include the Mophela area in eThekwiniโ€™s Ward 5 and a portion of Ward 105 being incorporated into the neigbouring uMkhambathini Municipality to take effect after the 2026 elections.
Executive Director in the Office of the City Manager Sipho Cele said the eThekwini Municipality will coordinate with uMkhambathini Municipality on the transfer of assets including a cemetery previously managed by eThekwini.
