After a brief hiatus, Atiak Sugar Factory, a beacon of hope for Northern Uganda’s economy, is poised for a resounding comeback. The factory’s resurrection promises to bring a plethora of new opportunities to the region, including job creation, economic growth, and revitalization of the local economy.
Our investigative team at TV10 Gano Mazima embarked on a journey to the Northern region to uncover the truth behind the factory’s closure and its plans for revival. After traversing over 450 kilometers, we arrived at the factory and we were warmly received by the administrators, Dr. Banti and Mr. Paul, CEO.
According to the technical experts, the factory’s closure was necessitated by the high cost of raw materials, particularly sugar canes, which were sourced from Jinja to Noerthen Uganda. This resulted in losses instead of profits. However, the factory has now embarked on growing its own sugar canes on-site, utilizing an irrigation scheme that will reduce the growth period from 18 months to 12 months.
The construction of a massive dam, spanning 40 acres, will provide a sustainable source of water for the sugar canes, enabling faster growth and multiple harvests per year. This innovative approach will significantly enhance productivity and quantity, positioning Atiak Sugar Factory as a trailblazer in the sugar industry.
Dr. BANTI Explaining the Dam construction process.
With state-of-the-art machinery and modern technology, the factory is committed to producing high-quality sugar that will meet local demand and supply neighboring countries. The factory’s revival is expected to create numerous jobs, stimulate economic growth, and revitalize the region’s economy.
Furthermore, the factory plans to construct tarmac roads, build hospitals and schools, and provide electricity, Wi-Fi, and lights throughout the farm areas. This comprehensive approach will create a secure and comfortable environment for the surrounding communities, addressing hunger and poverty.
As Atiak Sugar Factory gears up for its triumphant return, we invite everyone to support its revival and be part of the Northern region’s success story. Together, let’s make Uganda’s sugar industry shine brighter than ever!
