Faridi Rashid Achumu scored the crucial goal that ensured UPDF FC’s survival in the Uganda Premier League.
The Army side secured a 1-0 victory over Wakiso Giants at the Kabaka Kyabaggu Stadium in the final match of the 2023/2024 season.
Busoga United and Gaddafi FC will join Arua Hill in the Big League next season after failing to win their matches. Busoga United lost 3-0 to BUL FC at the Kakindu Stadium, while Gaddafi FC fell 3-0 to Kitara FC at the Masindi Municipal Stadium.
Prior to the season’s climax, UPDF FC was trailing both Busoga United and Gaddafi FC by one point. Heading into the game, only a win could secure their place in the league, while hoping both Gaddafi FC and Busoga United would lose.
The decisive moment for UPDF FC came in the 60th minute when Faridi’s close-range tap-in, off a pass from Muwadda Mawejje, went past Goalkeeper Bashir Ssekagya.
UPDF FC finishes the league with 27 points in 13th place. Both Busoga United and Gaddafi FC finished level on 25 points, occupying the 14th and 15th positions, respectively.
