FEDSAS rejects 60 GP school funding cut

FEDSAS rejects 60% GP school funding cut

The Federation of Governing Bodies of South African Schools (FEDSAS) has described the slashing of funding of quintile 5 schools or former model C schools as unacceptable.
This is after the Gauteng Education Department decided to cut funding to these kinds of schools by 60%, from next month.
The Federation in Gauteng says the perception that learners from these schools can afford higher costs is misleading.
“The concern is based on two reasons. First, the timing of when the budget allocation was changed. It was after the schools had already held their Annual General Meeting (AGM), where the budget was approved. Parents voted for the budget and were later surprised to learn that some schools were losing half a R1m to a R1m in state funding,” says The Federation’s Deputy Chief Executive Officer, Riaan van der Bergh.
He says the second concern is that it was done without consultation with the schools.
“It came as a surprise and was implemented unilaterally,” Bergh adds.
