Former UNEB Secretary Mathew Bukenya is Dead
The Former Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) executive secretary Mathew Bukenya has died. Bukenya (90) died at around 1:30am on Monday morning from Rubaga Hospital where he has been receiving treatment, his daughter has said.
Catherine Nansamba Mubiru said the burial arrangements for his father will be released at an appropriate time when her brother arrives from the US.
UNEB, in a brief post on X, formerly Twitter, said it was “deeply saddened” about the passing of Mathew Bukenya.
“His guidance and mentorship meant the world to most of us in UNEB,” it said.
“We will always cherish the lessons he imparted and the support he provided. His leadership was exemplary, guiding and inspiring. His legacy will continue to shine bright in our hearts and minds. May his soul rest in eternal peace.”
Bukenya was the longest serving chief examiner after replacing David Ongom in April 1995. Ongom was axed following leakage of primary and secondary examination papers that year.
Bukenya was formally appointed on January 6, 2003, after seven years in acting capacity and went on to run the national examinations board for 17 years.
Prior, Bukenya had served as an accountant in UNEB and retired after clocking 60 years. He had been recalled from retirement by President Museveni in 1997 to help restore the credibility of the examinations institution and his name would become synonymous with national examinations. Bukenya retired a second time on March 31, 2016.
