Free State man sentenced to 18 years for raping younger sister

The Phuthaditjhaba Regional Court has sentenced a 37-year-old man to 18 years in prison for the raping his sister.
Police Spokesperson Mmako Mophiring says in March 2019, the 24-year-old victim from Thibela village returned home from a local tavern, entered her house, locked the door and went to bed.
During the night, while she was asleep, she felt someone touching her and realised it was her brother.
Out of fear, she could not scream.
The brother proceeded to undress and rape her several times before fleeing the scene through a broken door.
Mophiring says the victim immediately reported the matter to the police who arrested the perpetrator.
In a 2024 crime stats report, the Free State saw an increase in rape, attempted murder, assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm and common assault cases between October and December.
