Shibiri denies institutional capture claims at SAPS

General Shibiri denies referring to blogger Musa Khawula as ‘chomi’

Suspended national head of organised crime in the South African Police Service, Major-General Richard Shibiri has denied referring to entertainment blogger Musa Khawula as ‘chomi’ in a WhatsApp text message.
Testimony before the Madlanga Commission alleges that attempted murder accused Vusimuzi ‘Cat’ Matlala used his links with Shibiri to ensure that a warrant of arrest was issued for Khawula.
Khawula has previously published information about Matlala on his personal life and business dealings, that include the Tembisa Hospital corruption on social media platform X.
General Shibiri told Commissioner Sandile Khumalo SC that he was not the one communicating with Khawula on Matlala’s behalf.
Commissioner Khumalo, “Because the person speaking in the WhatsApp was referring to Mr Khawula as chomi. I understand that you want to clarify that you would never call him that. So that’s not you in those WhatsApp [messages]?”
General Shibiri: “Yes, it’s not me. Yeah, it’s not me. I don’t know him. I [have] never met him. I don’t have his number. He doesn’t have my number and I don’t use the name Chomi. I never used that one.”
