Government Agrees to Compensate Nakivubo Traders with UGX 20 Billion in Three Weeks

By Our Reporter

Leaders under the umbrella body governing traders, the Federation of Uganda Traders Associations (FUTA), have called off a planned strike by traders affected by recent floods that destroyed goods worth billions of shillings.

The strike had been organized to demand the UGX 20 billion compensation earlier promised by the President.

FUTA leaders, led by President John Kabanda, alongside spokesperson Moses Lwegaba and Secretary General Hussein Kato, met with affected traders at their offices in New Taxi Park near Mubende Stage. The traders had planned to stage a protest on March 25, during which they intended to close their businesses and march to the Office of the Prime Minister, led by Robinah Nabbanja, to demand compensation.

The traders were affected by floods that occurred on October 31, 2025, which left many shops submerged and goods destroyed.

According to FUTA leadership, several meetings have been held with government officials from the Ministry of Finance, who assured them that the government is ready and willing to release the UGX 20 billion within three weeks to compensate affected traders.

The leaders urged traders to remain calm and patient as the compensation process is finalized. They also called for the cancellation of the strike, which had been organized by traders from 16 arcades during a meeting held in Ndeeba two weeks ago.

Kabanda cautioned traders against misinformation and propaganda circulating on social media, dismissing claims that the President had not approved the compensation. He reassured traders that the government is committed to fulfilling its promise.

Meanwhile, FUTA spokesperson Moses Lwegaba revealed that the association has reported landlords who have failed to comply with the Landlord and Tenant Act to the relevant authorities. He warned that legal action will be taken against those who continue to violate the law.
