Government Takes Immediate Action on Garbage Management at Menvu, Relocates Affected Families from Kiteezi
The Government of Uganda has resolved to urgently address the growing waste management crisis in the Kampala metropolitan area by initiating immediate garbage management efforts at Menvu.
This decision was made during a meeting held today at the Office of the Prime Minister in Kampala, chaired by the First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for East African Affairs, Rt. Hon. Rebecca Kadaga.
Attendees at the meeting included several ministers, mayors, Chief Administrative Officers, Town Clerks, and development partners. It was unanimously agreed that waste management at Menvu should commence without delay to mitigate the severe garbage challenges facing the region.
This decision comes in the wake of the government’s move to stop dumping garbage in Entebbe, which had escalated into a nationwide issue, even disrupting operations at Entebbe International Airport.
Entebbe Municipality Mayor, Fabrice Rulinda, stated that while the municipality had provided a temporary solution, the area had been overwhelmed, compromising the image of the country.
Kira Municipality Mayor Julius Mutebi Nsubuga emphasized that local leaders had been eagerly awaiting a decisive government response to the waste management crisis. Similarly, Ssebuwufu John Mary, Executive Secretary for Planning and Civil Works at KCCA, highlighted the severe underfunding of Kampala’s waste management operations by the central government, despite the city being the face of the nation.
Minister for Works and Transport, Gen. Katumba Wamala, and Minister for Local Government, Raphael Magyezi, both pledged their commitment to swiftly address the situation.
Following extensive discussions, the First Deputy Prime Minister assured the public that the government is in control of the situation. In the interim, garbage dumping and management will be centered at Menvu while efforts to finalize a long-term solution in the Kiteezi area continue.
Additionally, the government is in the process of developing a comprehensive national garbage management plan, which will be rolled out across other cities and towns to prevent future crises like the one at Kiteezi.
