Gov’t Starts Processing Land Titles for Karusandara Residents

The government has started processing land titles for residents of Karusandara Sub County, Kasese District.

Karusandara sub-county was created in 1989. It is mainly occupied by members of the Basongora communities from Virunga National Park, who had settled on a piece of land measuring over 5,000 acres, mainly carved out of Mubuku Prisons farm.

According to the Uganda Lands Commission, 11,337 acres are expected to be given to individuals in the sub-county starting next month. The land will be curved out from Mubuku prison farmland.

In 2022, the Minister of Land and Urban Development, Judith Nabakoba met the community of the Sub County and expressed the government’s commitment to ensure security of tenure of people occupying the land.

The Uganda Land commission-ULC acting chairman, Prof. Pen Mogi Nyeko said they are acting on the directive of the President who pledged to relinquish government interest in the same land in favour of the residents.

Mogi who met leaders and locals from the sub-county said the government was aware of the tensions in the community and they are working around the clock to ensure the titles are out by next month.

Gideon Thembo Mujungu, the Busongora County South says it is more than 30 years since the community began demanding for individual titles. He is now optimistic that once titles are released, community members can effectively utilize their land for socio-economic transformation.

Gladys Ahebwa, a resident in the sub-county says they fear to establish major development projects because they are uncertain about their stay on the land.

The government holds over 60 percent of the land in Kasese with the three tribes of Bakhonzo, Basongora, and Banyabindi squeezed into a corridor to share the remaining portion.
