Hard Work, Vision Propel Malcolm Okello to Uganda’s Rugby Elite
Malcolm Okello’s rise to the senior national rugby team reflects not just his talent, but his resilience and love for the game.
A player known for his versatility as a flyhalf and fullback, Okello has been a standout performer in Uganda’s rugby scene, contributing to Platinum Credit Heathens’ success in the Nile Special Rugby Premiership.
His leadership was also pivotal in guiding Uganda’s U20 team, the Baby Cranes, to win the 2022 Rugby Africa U20 Barthes Trophy, where he topped the points table with 42 points in just three matches.
Okello’s coach from his youth days, Coach Sky praised his work ethic, positive attitude, and vision on the field.
“Malcolm has always been a joyful, hardworking player,” said Coach Sky, who coached Okello during his early days in tag rugby at Kyadondo Club. “Seeing him earn this call-up fills me with pride as a grassroots coach.”
Even as he prepares to represent Uganda in the prestigious Willem Strauss International Rugby 7’s Tournament, Okello remains humble and committed to his journey.
He acknowledges the hardships of juggling rugby with academics and overcoming injuries, yet his passion for the sport keeps him motivated.
“I believe in myself and I know I can do better,” Okello said, underscoring his desire to keep pushing boundaries and inspire other young players across the country.
