Hiking to Margherita Peak Resumes – UWA Announces
The Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) has announced the resumption of hiking activities to Margherita Peak in Rwenzori Mountains National Park.
In a statement released on Tuesday, UWA’s communications head, Bashir Hangi, confirmed that safety improvements have been implemented to ensure the well-being of hikers. “The temporary suspension of hiking activities was lifted after these enhancements were put in place,” he noted.
“With these safety measures now in place, hiking to Margherita Peak can safely resume. We are confident that these improvements will provide a safer and more enjoyable experience for all visitors seeking to summit one of Africa’s most iconic peaks,” part of the statement read.
In May 2024, UWA temporarily suspended hiking activities to Margherita Peak as a precautionary measure following a comprehensive assessment. This assessment was prompted by reports of a crevasse formation in the Margherita Glacier.

“The Authority prioritizes the safety and well-being of all visitors and remains committed to ensuring a safe experience at Rwenzori National Park,” the management emphasized.
“While closely monitoring the situation, we encourage visitors to explore other scenic peaks within the park as developments on Margherita Peak unfold.” They added.
Among the key safety improvements is the construction of a bridge across the crevasse in the Margherita Glacier. This bridge, along with additional climbing ropes, will enable safer passage through the more challenging sections of the trail.
UWA also highlighted that each hiking route within the park offers a unique adventure, showcasing the breathtaking beauty and diversity of the Rwenzori Mountains. Visitors are encouraged to explore not only Margherita Peak but also other stunning peaks in the park, including Mount Speke, Mount Baker, and Cheptegei Peak on the Stanley Range.
