how the new Immigration Plan boosts Express Entry candidates chances for success
Canada Immigration Levels Plan, which sets targets for how many immigrants the country will invite each year, has significant implications for Express Entry candidates. Canadian immigration continues to be an integral part of their economy. According to the plan, the Express Entry candidates have more PR spots in 2025 than the previous year. However, this year we saw a reduction in the number of Permanent Residents target.Increased Allocation of Express Entry CandidatesThe primary question that arises is the impact of the plan on the Express Entry candidates. Two main types of candidates can benefit from this:-Candidates from CanadaCandidates who qualify for Category-based drawsOther candidates belonging to the different categories can face challenges in their application. The table below shows the allocation of Express Entry candidates in 2024 and 2025:- 2025 target – current Plan2025 target – last year’s Plan2024 target – last year’s Plan 124,680 117,500110,770 The 2025 target of 124,680 Express Candidates, which includes both “Economic Priorities” and “In-Canada Focus” shows an increase from the 2024 target. In 2024, IRCC had targeted the Federal High Skilled Category. Applicants can expect a higher number of ITAs through the Express Entry pathway in 2025 than in 2024.Impact on “In-Canada Focus” CandidatesOne of the key changes in the recent Immigration Levels Plan is the prioritization of in-Canada candidates. You have a higher chance of receiving an ITA if you have a temporary work permit in Canada. The Canadian government is keen on retaining the skilled workers.Recently, Marc Miller announced his intention to have more in-Canada immigration draws. It would help the temporary residents aiming to secure Permanent Resident status. IRCC has issued 25,700 ITAs over 8 CEC draws from May to October 2024. Calculate Your CRS PointsPrioritization of Category-based DrawsIRCC will be more focused on candidates who are more proficient in the French language or are highly skilled. Canada will promote cultural diversity and address labour shortage problem. IRCC has set a target of 41,700 permanent residents for a category called “Federal Economic Priorities”. They will target this category with the help of category-based draws.Category-based draws will invite those who fall under these categories to apply for Canada Permanent Residency:-French-language proficiencyHealthcare occupationsTransport occupationsScience, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) occupationsTrade occupationsAgriculture and agri-food occupationsTo be eligible for category-based immigration draws, the candidate should have six years of experience (full-time or an equivalent part-time) over the last 3 years in an in-demand occupation.Category-based Draws in 2024The table below lists the category-based draws in 2024:- CategoryNumber of drawsNumber of ITAs Agriculture and agri-food 1150 French language proficiency 921,400 Healthcare 27,250 STEM 14,500 Trade23,600Transport1975 According to the plan, healthcare, trades, and French-speaking candidates will be given more advantages. Ugandan Citizen Abducted, Held in Secret Detention for Three Months, Sparks Outrage and Calls for Justice
A disturbing new case of unlawful detention has surfaced, highlighting the ongoing human rights crisis in Uganda. A Ugandan citizen was reportedly abducted and held in a secret facility, known as a “safe house,” for three months, only to be released without charge or explanation. This incident, reported by NTV Uganda, has sparked widespread condemnation and renewed calls for accountability regarding human rights abuses in the country.
While the details surrounding the abduction remain unclear, reports indicate that the individual was taken without due process and held incommunicado—an action that has long been condemned by human rights organizations. The victim’s release, with no charges filed and no clear justification, has angered activists and citizens, who view this as yet another case of egregious abuse of power by the state.
“This is a recurring pattern,” said one human rights activist. “Abductions, secret detentions, and unexplained releases have become all too common in Uganda. These acts violate fundamental human rights and erode public trust in the justice system.”
The use of “safe houses,” unregistered detention facilities reportedly operated by security forces, has been a focal point in numerous allegations of torture and illegal imprisonment. Despite repeated calls from both local and international organizations for their closure and accountability for those involved, little action has been taken to address these violations.
This case underscores the urgent need for reform within Uganda’s security apparatus and greater accountability for human rights abuses. Observers hope that drawing attention to these injustices will spur concrete action to bring those responsible to justice and ensure the protection of basic human rights.
As frustration mounts, calls for both domestic and international pressure to hold the government accountable for such crimes grow louder. “One day, there must be accountability for all these crimes against our people,” stated one social media user, reflecting the sentiments of many Ugandans.

NUP Gathering Disrupted: Kyagulanyi Alleges Security Force Harassment and Arrests
National Unity Platform (NUP) President Robert Kyagulanyi has accused Ugandan security forces of using excessive force to disrupt a planned NUP gathering. The allegations were detailed in a statement shared on Twitter, following an event held to honor children of NUP supporters who were killed, disappeared, or detained for their political beliefs.
According to Kyagulanyi, security personnel, under the command of an officer identified as Asiimwe, carried out a preemptive operation early in the morning upon learning of the NUP’s plans. The forces allegedly stormed the premises, arrested workers, and deployed tear gas to disperse those present.
“The criminals under the command of one Asiimwe deployed early morning, arrested our workers, and threw tear gas into our premises. They’ve cordoned off the premises and blocked all people from accessing the place,” Kyagulanyi wrote.
Among those reportedly arrested were Saava Peter, Mudenya Samson, and Turyasingura Samson. Kyagulanyi claimed the detained workers were subjected to beatings and interrogated about their political affiliations, with security operatives labeling them as terrorists.
“These JATT operatives asked the workers who they support politically, branding them terrorists and criminals—their only crime being that they work with us. You can imagine the indignity!” Kyagulanyi lamented.
This incident adds to the growing tension in Uganda’s political climate, where opposition parties frequently accuse the government of stifling dissent. Despite the challenges, Kyagulanyi ended his statement with a message of defiance and optimism, proclaiming, “UGANDA WILL BE FREE.”
