MP ROLLAND NDYOMUGYENYINRM FLAG BEARER PATRICK KICONCO KATABAZIBy Kweronda AmbroseIn Rukiga district/Kigeziwww.mknewslink.comThe incumbent Member of Parliament for Rukiga constituency, Rolland Ndyomugyenyi Bish, has publicly condemned the National Resistance Movement (NRM) flag bearer, Patrick Kiconco Katabazi, accusing him of spreading divisive and misleading rhetoric aimed at undermining independent candidates during the ongoing election campaigns. Both Bish and Kiconco, along with Capt. (Rtd) Damson Christmas Kivumba and Benita Rumanzi Bushari, are in the race for the parliamentary seat for Rukiga, making it a highly competitive and contested election. However, it is Kiconco’s statements about independent candidates that have sparked the most controversy.Bish’s criticism stems from comments made by Kiconco during joint NRM campaigns in Rukiga, where Kiconco urged voters to support only the NRM flag bearer, suggesting that independent candidates have no place in Uganda’s Parliament. Kiconco’s statements, in particular, claimed that independents don’t have anywhere to sit in Parliament, implying that voting for independent candidates would be a waste of the people’s votes. In response, Ndyomugyenyi Bish has vehemently disagreed with Kiconco’s position, labeling it as an attempt to sow division and incite hatred among the electorate. Bish accused Kiconco of spreading lies by suggesting that independent MPs have no seat in Parliament, pointing out that this claim is completely unfounded. Bish further emphasized that the parliamentary seat belongs to the people of Rukiga, not to any one individual or political party. According to Bish, the voters should have the freedom to choose their representative based on merit, not party affiliation. He pointed out that, over the years, independent members of Parliament have played critical roles in passing significant legislation and holding the government accountable, and that their contribution should not be dismissed based on party lines. Bish himself has served as an independent MP and is a firm advocate for the idea that the people of Rukiga should have the freedom to vote for the best candidate, regardless of party affiliation.Bish also took the opportunity to criticize the growing trend of party-centric politics, where loyalty to a political party often outweighs loyalty to constituents’ needs. He warned that Kiconco’s rhetoric is part of a broader effort to marginalize independent voices in the political arena, a move he sees as detrimental to the democratic process.
