A section of Road users along the Nyabikoni–Kiyora road have expressed frustration after a section of the road connecting to Rwakaraba Modern Washing Bay remained in a deplorable and impassable condition for several days. They say the road was washed away by running water, which they attribute to poor drainage along the route.Residents noted that it has now been over two months since the drainage channels along the Nyabikoni road were last cleaned, causing the area to become muddy and blocking the flow of water. As a result, water overflowed and eventually cut off the road.According to Abudi Hakim, a boda boda rider who parks at the Nyabikoni Secondary School stage, they have been forced to use longer alternative routes, which consume more time and fuel. He added that they have lost some of their customers because of the poor state of the road.Car washers at Rwakaraba Modern Washing Bay including Pindu Pindu Emmanuel, Justus Ainebyona, Isaac Arinda, and Johnson Tumwijukye alias Toboka also said that the poor condition of the road has posed a risk to road users, especially young children who struggle to pass through the muddy and slippery section. They cited incidents where children failed to cross due to the dangerous state of the road. They further revealed that many of their customers who used to bring cars from Nyabikoni for washing no longer come, which has reduced their daily income. They said they are now struggling to earn a living as they did before the road deteriorated. The Kabale Municipality Acting Engineer, Fred Turinawe, said the affected 0.24 km stretch connects the Nyabikoni and Kiyora roads, but it lies below the level of the washing bay area. He noted that the section has already been planned for and that construction will start soon. He said they are going to fill the road with aggregate material up to one meter high to raise it above the washing bay area, since it lies in a swampy section prone to damage. When contacted, the Kabale Municipality Town Clerk, Jamil Kassajja, said the municipal authorities are aware of the road’s condition but explained that a broken National Water pipeline released large amounts of water, which delayed the start of the project. He confirmed that they have engaged the ministry and the issue has now been resolved. He said the section needs to be worked on diligently and will be redesigned because it lies in a swampy area that requires total refilling and proper drainage. He reassured residents that the road will be rehabilitated soon, saying it was included in this financial year’s budget, funds have been secured, and work is expected to start next week without fail. He added that as supervisors, their role is to implement the budget passed by Mayor Sentaro Byamugisha and the municipal council committee. He further revealed that the washing bays will be redirected to another area for three months to allow maintenance works to be carried out, as they plan to construct a permanent road.
