KCCA kicked off their 2024/25 Uganda Premier League campaign with a narrow 1-0 victory over URA FC at Omondi Stadium in Lugogo.

The match saw Saidi Mayanja score the only goal of the game in the 30th minute, marking the first goal of the new season.

Mayanja’s decisive strike came after URA Captain Joshua Lubwama had blocked a pass from reaching Derrick Nsibambi, allowing Mayanja to connect with a loose ball from outside the box.

KCCA’s goal came against the run of play, as URA had dominated opening exchanges.

Following Mayanja’s goal, KCCA gained control of the game, creating several opportunities.

Nsibambi had a goal disallowed for offside before halftime, and KCCA’s goalkeeper, Derrick Ochan, made crucial saves to keep his team in the game, including a powerful effort from Bright Anukani.

Substitute Haruna Lukwago created a chance to double KCCA’s lead with a well-placed cross, but Mayanja headed wide.

URA, despite their industrious performance, could not find the back of the net. Joseph Ssemujju came close twice, and Shariph Kimbowa failed to beat KCCA’s goalkeeper, Mutwalibu Mugolofa, in the 10th minute.

URA’s coach Alex Isabirye faces a challenging start to the season, but he will remain aware that few teams will pose as tough a challenge as KCCA.

Meanwhile, KCCA’s coach Abdallah Mubiru will look to build on this win as they aim for their first league title in four seasons.

What next – KCCA visit BUL at Lugazi on September 20 while URA will welcome Bright Stars at Nakivubo on the same day.
