Kenya to Play Cameroon Behind Closed Doors at Namboole

Kenya will play their AFCON 2025 qualifier against Cameroon on Monday, October 14, 2024, at Mandela National Stadium (Namboole) in Uganda.

However, the match in Kampala will be played behind closed doors, a move that has left Ugandan fans fuming.

Although Kenya has not officially provided a reason for this decision, speculation suggests that they are concerned about the overwhelming support Cameroon could attract due to the presence of star goalkeeper André Onana.

Onana, who has a strong following due to his time with Manchester United, received significant applause from a large section of United fans during Zimbabwe’s match against Cameroon at Namboole in September.

This will be the second time Kenya is hosting a match at Namboole during their AFCON Qualifiers campaign, as they currently lack a certified stadium. They previously hosted Zimbabwe on September 6, 2024.

Kenya hopes the unusual decision to play without fans will help neutralize the advantage Cameroon could gain from Onana’s popularity among local supporters.
