Kitara’s Title Hopes Dented After Draw
Tuesday, April 30•Kitara 1-1 Mbarara City•URA FC 0-0 Busoga United
Kitara faced a setback in their pursuit of the Uganda Premier League title after being held to a 1-1 draw by Mbarara City in Masindi.
Despite taking an early lead through Denis Omedi, Kitara was unable to secure the win as Seiri Arigumaho’s late equalizer salvaged a point for Mbarara.
The result leaves Kitara just two points ahead of Vipers and BUL, who are level on 46 points.
The hosts, Kitara, got off to a promising start when Denis Omedi capitalized on a defensive error by Mbarara’s Henry Musisi to open the scoring in the 10th minute.
However, their lead was short-lived as Mbarara fought back in the second half.
Mbarara’s persistence paid off in the 83rd minute when Seiri Arigumaho found the back of the net with a well-placed header, leveling the scoreline and denying Kitara maximum points.
Kitara thought they had earned a penalty in added time when Paul Mucreezi was fouled in the box, but referee Joshua Duula awarded a free-kick, ruling that the infringement occurred just outside the penalty area.
Mucureezi stepped up to take the free-kick but his effort struck the defensive wall, resulting in a corner.
From the ensuing corner kick, Mucureezi narrowly missed the target with a headed attempt, falling just inches wide of the post.
Kitara now has a slim two-point lead at the top of the table, with both Vipers and BUL breathing down their necks, poised to capitalize on this slip-up.
Attention now turns to the clash between BUL and Vipers at the refurbished Namboole Stadium on Wednesday, where the outcome could potentially see a new leader emerge at the summit of the league standings.
