Kiteezi landfill tragedy: Death toll reaches 21

The number of people who have so far died following the landslide at Kiteezi dumpsite for KCCA has reached 21.Police on Sunday evening said more bodies had been retrieved from the ground.“So far, 21 bodied have been retrieved and taken to the City Mortuary in Mulago for autopsy,” Kampala Metropolitan police spokesperson, Patrick Onyango.The Saturday morning tragedy saw the collapse of the landfill after being pounded by heavy rains.A number of houses were buried by the debris.The incident has triggered rescue operations to help retrieve victims who could still be buried below the heaps of garbage in Kampala’s lone dumpsite.According to police, the rescue efforts are still continuing .President Museveni earlier on Sunday directed the IGG to investigate circumstances under which the incident happened but also directed the eviction of people around the dumpsite .KCCA told the president that whereas they had plans to relocate the landfill to Dundu in Mukono, locals said they dont want it that side.In the same vein, the president gave shs5 million to families of each of the people who died during this incident and shs1 million for each person injured. https://www.ugbulletin.co.ug/kiteezi-landfill-tragedy-death-toll-reaches-21/
