The African National Congress’s 1st Deputy Secretary-General Nomvula Mokonyane says the late Congress of the People (COPE) co-founder Mosiuoa ‘Terror’ Lekota believed in democracy and accountability.
She was speaking at Lekota’s memorial service at the Regina Mundi Catholic Church in Soweto, Johannesburg, on Wednesday.
The service was attended by some of his luminaries from his former political homes, the Black Consciousness Movement (BCM) and the United Democratic Front (UDF), where he cut his teeth as an anti-apartheid activist.
Mokonyane says, “He believed that leaders must speak honestly, even when it is difficult, and he believed that freedom carries with it the responsibility to always place the interest of the people first.”
She says, “His political journey has been articulated by many before me, but what is of importance is on behalf of the ANC is that we wish to thank the family for sharing Terror Lekota with the people of South Africa, for allowing him to spend most of his time under the mass democratic movement, even him asserting the central role of the African National Congress in the liberation struggle of the people of South Africa.”
