Limited Funding Hampers Ambulance Operations in Masaka
Africa-Press – Uganda. The Masaka Regional Referral Hospital is facing significant challenges in its ambulance services due to insufficient funding.
Appearing before the Public Accounts Committee (Central Government), the hospital’s Executive Director, Dr. James Elima, revealed that the hospital receives only Shs36 million quarterly to service and fuel five ambulances, which also support fueling generators and other travel within the region.
“This limited funding hampers the effectiveness of our ambulance services in the Greater Masaka region,” Dr. Elima said. The hospital is struggling to provide adequate emergency services, putting patients’ lives at risk.
The hospital’s struggles are not limited to ambulance services. It also faces staffing shortages, with only 21% of the required personnel, and unreliable power supply, which affects medical surgeries and oxygen supply.
