Limpopo farmers warn heavy rains threaten crops

Farmers say the return of heavy rains in some parts of Limpopo is threatening crops as some rivers and dams have burst their banks.  The management of Mabunda Farmers’ Cooperative outside Tzaneen says the rain is negatively affecting their operations.
Spokesperson for the Cooperative, Bennet Malungani says they have to hire a heavy-duty generator to sustain production after their transformer and operational plant became submerged.
The farm, that employs 400 workers, grows citrus for export.
Malungani says the Middle Letaba Dam, which is overflowing for the first time in 26 years, is also threatening their operations.
“In farming we depend on natural resources such as the rain, but the overflooding of the Letaba dam and the rains that is still expected brings the threat of floods already experienced. This will distract spraying of citrus’ black spots and FCM that is the phytosanitary pest in the region. We don’t know what will be the government intervention, should this occur, to help us as farmers.”
