Limpopo on high alert after renewed heavy flooding

The Limpopo government is on high alert after renewed flooding in the province following heavy rain over the weekend.
The worst affected areas are the Vhembe, Mopani and Waterberg districts where low-lying bridges have been washed away.
Mudslides along the R523 between Khalavha and Sibasa and damage to the R33 in Waterberg have been reported.
This comes only two months after severe floods caused R10 billion in infrastructure damage in the province.
Provincial government spokesperson Thilivhali Muavha says three disaster management teams are on standby to assist.
“The Limpopo provincial government is on high alert to address the severe flooding situation that has resurfaced across the Waterberg, Vhembe and Mopani districts. With some areas experiencing over 100 mm of rain in the last two days, the province stands vigilant and proactive in its response to the ongoing crisis. Premier Dr Phophi Ramathuba says that the present floods are a stark reminder of the warnings issued by the South African Weather Services, indicating that Limpopo is still at risk through the end of March.”
Pafuri Port of Entry
Meanwhile, the Border Management Authority (BMA) has temporarily suspended operations at the Pafuri Port of Entry between South Africa and Mozambique, situated in the far northern region of the Kruger National Park, due to the floods.
Pafuri Gate, which provides access to the border, has also been closed due to high flood water levels.
The BMA says travelers who intend to access Pafuri Gate are advised to use Punda Maria Gate as an alternative access point.
