Communal farmers in several villages, including Bungeni outside Louis Trichardt, in Limpopo, say they are experiencing cases of foot rot disease in goats due to the persistent rains.
Advocate Shirhami Shirinda from the Bungeni Farming Forum says a number of cases of the contagious disease have been reported in the past week.
The disease is caused by a bacterium which thrives in wet conditions, and it affects goats, sheep and cattle. The disease is coming at a time when farmers in the Vhembe District are battling the outbreak of Foot and Mouth Disease.
Shirindza says farmers are in a state of panic.
“Heavy rains have brought us foot root disease that affects goats and cattle. The disease is a long-lasting foot and mouth disease that started since the time of COVID-19. We are not accessing markets outside of the Vhembe and Mopani districts because of this disease. The government should provide us with medication, not sympathy of words,” adds Shirinda. – Reporting by Costner MthombeniÂ
