Magogo: St Julian’s USSSA Triumph Was No Accident

FUFA President Moses Magogo has said that St Julian’s victory in the Uganda Secondary Schools Sports Association (USSSA) Boys Football Tournament was a result of deliberate effort and planning, not mere chance.

Magogo made these remarks during St Julian’s awards dinner held at the Sheraton Hotel to celebrate the school’s historic win in the football tournament.

St Julian’s Seeta Campus clinched their first-ever title in May, defeating Amus College with an emphatic 3-0 victory in the final held at Masaka Secondary School grounds.

James Sekatte starred with two goals, while Simon Wanyama added another from the penalty spot to secure the win for Coach Felix Sekabuuza side.

“St Julian’s championship win was no accident,” Magogo emphasized in his key remarks.

“Many of these players previously won the Odilo tournament, a prestigious Primary Schools football championship, while at Rays of Grace before joining St Julian.”

Magogo credited St Julian’s success to the four pillars of success—knowledge, passion, discipline, and dedication—stressing that the team embodied all these qualities throughout the competition.

He also praised the school’s Director, Jeff Sserunjogi, a seasoned football enthusiast with a background at FUFA, for his role in fostering the team’s growth.

“I commend the School management for prioritizing football and investing in these talented youngsters,” Magogo added.

Magogo further clarified FUFA’s intentions, addressing misconceptions about the FUFA TV Cup, which some believed was created to compete with the USSSA tournament. “We regard USSSA as the Champions League of Schools football, and they have done a great job in helping to provide opportunities for students to access free education through the sport.”

St Julian’s path to the title was marked by impressive victories, including overcoming hosts Masaka SS in the quarterfinals and Bukedea Comprehensive in the semifinals.

Their win also ended the dominance of St Mary’s SS Kitende, who had claimed the previous three championships.

During the awards dinner, Director Sserunjogi honored several individuals who played crucial roles in the school’s success, including Robert Kiwanuka, the chairman of the Uganda Youth Football Association (UYFA) and director at Rays of Grace, for his significant contributions.
