Summary:
A venerable Kenyan business, Mahomed Moti & Sons Ltd, stands strong after 125 years in Meru. Founded by Mahomed Moti in the early 20th century, the enterprise has evolved into a cornerstone of the community, offering diverse products and services.
In Meru, Kenya, a venerable business stands as a testament to resilience and endurance. Established at the dawn of the 20th century, Mahomed Moti & Sons Ltd remains an integral part of Biashara Street’s bustling landscape, a street renowned for its Indian-owned enterprises.
Originating from Kutiana village in Kathiawar, India, Mahomed Moti, a visionary trader, embarked on a journey that would shape the commercial landscape of Meru. Arriving in Mombasa in 1896, he was persuaded by fellow Indians to settle in Kenya. Thus began his entrepreneurial journey, culminating in the founding of Mahomed Moti & Sons Ltd, a name bestowed upon by British officers, albeit misspelled due to Moti’s pronounced Indian accent.
As Meru burgeoned into a township in 1911 under Commissioner Edward Butler Horne, Mahomed Moti’s business flourished, earning the moniker ‘Duka La Serikali’ for its patronage by colonialists. Evolving over the years, it now specializes in electronics, spare parts, machinery, and equipment, a far cry from its humble beginnings.
The enduring success of Mahomed Moti & Sons Ltd can be attributed to its unwavering commitment to quality and its symbiotic relationship with the Meru County Government. Managed by Mahomed Moti’s grandson, Mr. Majid Suleman, the business continues to thrive, embodying the principles of its founder.
From its inception, Mahomed Moti’s enterprise diversified, encompassing hardware, petroleum products, and milling, establishing itself as a pivotal player in the region’s economy. With a network of over 65 shops nationwide, Mahomed Moti was not only a shrewd businessman but also a visionary, mentoring fellow Indians in their entrepreneurial pursuits.
Despite Mahomed Moti’s untimely demise in 1930, his legacy endured through his sons, who steered the business through the tumultuous years of the Second World War. Pioneers in introducing Public Service Vehicles on the Nairobi-Meru route, the Moti family’s commitment to innovation and service remained unwavering.
Beyond commerce, Mahomed Moti left an indelible mark on Nairobi’s landscape, spearheading the construction of the Jamia Mosque and advocating for its sustainability through adjacent commercial ventures. His foresight and dedication to Meru’s prosperity continue to inspire generations, a testament to the enduring legacy of Mahomed Moti & Sons Ltd.
