Man handed life sentence for raping stepdaughter for 13 years

A 39-year-old stepfather has been sentenced to life imprisonment for raping his stepdaughter over a period of 13-years.
The Prieska Regional Court in the Northern Cape heard that the minor was sexually abused by the man since the age of three.
The court also heard that the girl fell pregnant a few times as a result of the abuse.
Provincial police spokesperson, Merapelo Pilane says that the rape was reported in 2020.
“The Prieska Regional Court heard that in July 2020, a concerned community member alerted the police to a possible sexual assault involving a 16-year-old victim. Preliminary investigations confirmed that the victim had been sexually abused. A rape case was subsequently registered, and the suspect was arrested and formally charged. Further investigation revealed that the accused had been sexually abusing the victim over a period of 13 years. It was also established that the victim had fallen pregnant on several occasions as a result of the abuse.”
Last year, President Cyril Ramaphosa declared Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF) as a national disaster.
The classification signaled a heightened level of urgency and acknowledgment by government of the severity of the crisis.
