Maroons Overcome Lugazi For First Win of the Season
Maroons picked up their first victory of the 2024/25 Uganda Premier League season, edging Lugazi FC 1-0 in a closely contemporary match on Sunday at the Luzira Prisons ground.
The match’s decisive moment came in the 89th minute when Derrick Basoga’s header was controversially handled by Lugazi defender Gift Lubega at the near post.
Referee Solomon Jumba immediately pointed to the spot and issued a second yellow card to Lubega, reducing Lugazi to 10 men.
Brian Omirambe stepped up to take the penalty, and he calmly sent Lugazi goalkeeper Juma Mutebi the wrong way to secure all three points for his side.
It was a joyous ending for Maroons in a game that saw kickoff delayed for about an hour after rain.
This result lifts Maroons to 11th place on the table with five points, following previous losses to Wakiso Giants and draws with UPDF and Express.
On the other hand, Lugazi remain at the bottom of the table with just one point, earned from a draw against Vipers. They suffered defeats to Kitara and UPDF.
