MISA supports call for Digital Workers’ charter, AI adoption

The Motor Industry Staff Association (MISA) says it supports Deputy President Paul Mashatile’s call for workers to be assisted in adapting to artificial intelligence (AI).
Mashatile has challenged labour federations to develop a Digital Workers’ Charter, warning that while AI can improve efficiency, it also requires new skills and could significantly reshape the labour market.
MISA spokesperson Phakamile Hlubi-Majola says the union will engage with employers to prioritise retraining and upskilling initiatives.
Hlubi-Majola says, “We accept the challenge that the DP has put before labor. It’s really important that workers should be at the forefront of basically designing and driving policy around AI and even propose the idea that workers should develop a digital workers charter. If you look at the research that’s been done on AI already, the reports are suggesting that as many as 85 million jobs could be lost as a result of AI by 2030…”
She adds, “Our focus will be to expand targeted reskilling and expand learning opportunities for members where will be prioritizing practical job relevant training and partnerships with training providers that will allow us to ensure no member is left behind.”
